Celebrating an outstanding UNSW Medicine ILP-Honours cohort

We are delighted to congratulate this year’s graduating UNSW Medicine ILP-Honours students — Gerard Wirawan, Daniel Looi, Joshua Auto and Isabella Lorenzo — perhaps one of the finest cohorts we have had at the St George Hospital Orthopaedic Research Institute.

What made this group particularly impressive was not only the quality of their individual research, but the way they worked together as a team.

Every student submitted their work for publication — an exceptional achievement across the entire cohort.

Their research is already gaining international recognition, with Daniel Looi having a paper accepted and Isabella Lorenzo an ePoster accepted for the 2027 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting — two of five ORI presentations at the meeting.

ORI at AAOS 2027

  • Daniel Looi — How Much Should the Shoulder Move After Rotator Cuff Repair? Defining Safe and Unsafe Zones for Repair Integrity (Paper presentation)
  • Isabella Lorenzo — Shear Wave Elastography Versus Tear Characteristics in Predicting Rotator Cuff Retear After Primary Arthroscopic Repair (ePoster presentation)
  • Antonette Bilog — Pre-operative Shear Wave Elastography is Predictive of Repair Integrity in Rotator Cuff Repairs: A Prospective Cohort Study (ePoster presentation; AOSSM Specialty Day oral presentation)
  • Yash Agrawal — Gain with Pain: Supraspinatus Tendon Elastographic Stiffness is Greater, not Lesser, in Primary and Secondary Adhesive Capsulitis (ePoster presentation)

We would also like to thank our research collaborators for their invaluable guidance and support throughout the students’ projects: Yama Bilog (pictured), Patrick Lam, Mina Shenouda and Neil Millar.
